She

She ran into her friends Ex.

She thought he was “sweet”.

She went on a date with him.

She wondered why her friend said she ought to be careful.

She didn’t see he had an “other side”.

She didn’t heed the warning. ‘He’ll never do that – he’s not that kind of guy’.

She enjoyed the cards and the flowers, the nights out and the dinners.

She fell in love and was certain that so did he.

She didn’t wake to his domineering ways.

She turned away invitations from friends.

She thought she was wrong, because he told her so.

She had forgotten her warning from her friend.

And then he pushed her.

And then he shoved her.

And then he hit her.

She did nothing wrong, but she believed she deserved it.

She hid away the pain under polo necks and scarves, tears behind make-up, fear behind her smile.

She became a good liar.

Her lies hurt her more.

Ashamed of her secret, she would not tell a soul.

Her silence gave him power, and dulled her light,

His words played over in her head.
There is no way out.

There is no way out.

There is no hope.

She bowed her head for her final beating,

She didn’t struggle.

She lay silent.

Her pain then subdued.

And the monster chuckled, his deed was done.
